How Often Should You Change an Air Filter?
The 90-day rule is a ceiling, not a schedule. Depth, run hours and what is in your air all move the number — and a five-second light test beats every estimate in this guide.
Change a 1-inch pleated filter every 60 to 90 days, a 4-inch media filter every 6 to 12 months. Those are ceilings, not schedules — pets, smoke, renovation dust and heavy run hours all pull the number down, sometimes by half.
The reliable check takes five seconds and beats any calendar: hold the filter up to a light. If light does not pass through the media, it is finished.
Ask three HVAC technicians how often to change a filter and you will get "every 90 days," "every month," and "when it looks dirty." All three are defensible, which is exactly why the question keeps getting asked.
The disagreement exists because the honest answer depends on three things nobody puts on the packaging: how thick your filter is, how many hours your blower actually runs, and what is floating around inside your house. This guide works through all three, then gives you a test that removes the guesswork entirely.
Start with depth, not the calendar
The single biggest factor is how much media the filter holds, and that is a function of depth. A 4-inch filter is not four times thicker for marketing reasons — it holds several times the pleated surface area, so it takes several times longer to load up.

Never stack thin filters to fill a deep cabinet. Three 1-inch filters in a 4-inch rack do not behave like one 4-inch filter — the frames cannot seal against each other, so air finds the gaps between them and skips the media entirely.
What actually happens as a filter loads
Here is the part that surprises people, and it is the reason "change it monthly to be safe" is poor advice rather than cautious advice.
A brand-new pleated filter is the worst it will ever be at catching fine particles. As dust accumulates, the captured debris narrows the gaps in the media and the filter becomes progressively more effective. Filtration efficiency climbs for weeks.
Airflow restriction climbs too — but not on the same curve. For the first stretch it rises gently, then it turns sharply upward. That turn is where the cost lives.
Before the knee in that curve, your filter is doing its best work and costing you almost nothing in airflow. After it, the blower is fighting the filter: longer run cycles, higher static pressure, more energy for the same result. On air conditioning in particular, badly restricted airflow can drop the coil below freezing and ice it over.
So changing a filter at 30 days is not "extra safe." You are throwing away media at the point it just became good at its job, and paying for a replacement to start the cycle over at lower efficiency.
The light test
Every interval in this guide is an estimate for an average house. This test is a measurement of your house, and it takes five seconds.
Pull the filter out and hold it up against a bright window, or shine a phone torch through it from behind. Judge the media in the middle of the panel, not the frame.

Do this once a month for two or three months and you will learn your own interval — at which point you can stop checking and simply set a reminder. Most households land somewhere between 55 and 100 days on a 1-inch filter.
What shortens the interval
These are the conditions that move the number, roughly in order of how much they matter.

Notice that every one of these is about what passes through the filter, not how long it has been sitting there. A filter in an empty house in February is nearly as clean in April as it was when installed, because the blower has barely moved any air across it.
Run hours matter more than the calendar. A system running hard through a Texas August loads a filter faster than the same system does across a mild spring, even though the number of days is identical. If your interval always seems to run short in summer, this is why.
Signs you left it too long
A filter past its useful life announces itself, usually in this order:
- Weaker airflow from the supply vents. The most direct symptom. Hold your hand at a register you know well and compare it to how it normally feels.
- Longer run cycles. The system takes noticeably more time to reach the thermostat setpoint than it did a month ago.
- Dust settling faster on surfaces. Counterintuitive, but a heavily loaded filter forces air to find leak paths around it, so unfiltered air recirculates.
- Whistling at the filter slot. Air being drawn hard through a restricted opening. This is a late-stage sign.
- Ice on the refrigerant line or coil in cooling mode. Stop the system and call a technician. Restricted airflow is one cause of coil freezing, and running a frozen system risks the compressor.
If you find ice on the indoor coil or the copper line, switch the system to fan-only to thaw it and get a technician out. Replacing the filter may address the cause, but ice formation can also point to a refrigerant problem, and that is not a homeowner repair.
Does a higher MERV need changing more often?
Yes, in practice, though not for the reason most people assume.
A MERV 13 filter captures finer particles than a MERV 8, which means it takes material out of the air that the MERV 8 would have let pass. That material accumulates in the media. Same house, same run hours, same depth — the higher-MERV filter reaches its restriction knee sooner.

This is the trade-off worth understanding before upgrading MERV: you are buying better filtration and paying for it in both filter cost and change frequency. It is often the right call for allergy sufferers. It is rarely the right call simply because a higher number sounded better on the shelf.

What the interval is actually worth
Filters are cheap and the calculation is short. A basic 1-inch pleated filter runs roughly $4 to $8. On a 90-day interval that is about four filters a year — call it $16 to $32 for a standard system.
Changing monthly instead pushes that to twelve filters, $48 to $96 a year, and as covered above, you spend more to get slightly worse average filtration. Stretching to six months on a 1-inch filter saves maybe $10 a year and puts the blower under sustained strain for months.
The economics point at the same window the engineering does: 60 to 90 days on a 1-inch filter, verified with the light test rather than assumed from the calendar.
A routine that works
- Buy in packs of four or six. Cheaper per unit, and a spare on the shelf removes the excuse for leaving a loaded filter in place.
- Write the install date on the frame. A marker on the cardboard edge, next to the size. Takes three seconds and settles every future argument about when it went in.
- Set a 30-day reminder for the first three cycles. Not to change it — to run the light test and learn your interval.
- Check the airflow arrow every time. It points toward the blower, away from the return duct. A backwards filter collapses under pressure.
- Once you know your interval, switch to a calendar reminder at that spacing and stop checking monthly.
